Learn every note on the guitar fretboard with this simple guide and fretboard notes chart. Understand the guitar neck and navigate the entire fretboar
One of the most important steps in learning the guitar is understanding the notes across the fretboard.
Many guitarists learn scale shapes and chord patterns without fully understanding where the notes actually exist on the neck. While shapes can help you play quickly, real fretboard freedom comes from knowing the notes themselves.
Once you understand how notes are arranged across the guitar fretboard, the entire instrument becomes easier to navigate.

The musical alphabet contains seven natural notes:
A B C D E F G
After G, the sequence repeats again.
Some notes include sharps or flats between them, but there are two important exceptions:
There are no sharps between B and C, and no sharps between E and F.
This pattern repeats across every string on the guitar.
Each fret on the guitar represents one semitone.
Moving up one fret increases the pitch by one semitone. Moving down one fret lowers the pitch by one semitone.
Because the guitar has six strings tuned mostly in fourths, the same notes appear in multiple places across the neck.
This allows guitarists to play scales, chords and melodies in different positions across the fretboard.

This allows guitarists to play scales, chords and melodies in different positions across the fretboard.

When you understand the notes on the guitar neck, many aspects of playing become easier.
You can:
• learn scales more quickly
• build chords more confidently
• improvise across the entire neck
• understand music theory more clearly
Instead of relying only on shapes, you begin to see the fretboard as a connected musical system.
One effective practice method is choosing a single note and locating it across the entire guitar neck.
For example, find every E note on the fretboard.
Then repeat the exercise with other notes.
This method gradually builds a mental map of the guitar neck.
Over time, recognising note locations becomes second nature.
