🎸 The Difference Between Playing Music and Feeling Music

🎸 The Difference Between Playing Music and Feeling Music

Why most guitarists never truly connect with what they play

🎧 Are You Playing Music… or Just Playing Notes?

This past week, I asked one of my students a simple question:

👉 “What would you like me to help you with?”

His response was even better:

👉 “What’s the difference between just playing music… and actually feeling it?”

That’s a great question.

Because this is where everything changes.

🎸 The Reality Most Guitarists Face

Over the years, I’ve taught thousands of lessons, and I see this all the time.

Players can:

  • Learn scales
  • Memorise licks
  • Play songs note-for-note

…but something is missing.

👉 It sounds right… but it doesn’t feel like music.

And here’s the truth:

👉 Knowing what to play is not the same as knowing how to express it.

🧠 Where Things Go Wrong

A lot of guitarists are taught to:

  • Copy
  • Repeat
  • Memorise

And while there’s nothing wrong with that…

👉 It only gets you so far.

Because music doesn’t start with your fingers.

👉 It starts with what you hear.

🎧 Music Starts Internally

Before you play anything…

You should be able to:

  • Hear it
  • Feel it
  • Anticipate it

Even if it’s just a simple phrase.

This is where the shift happens:

👉 From mechanical playing
👉 To musical expression

🎸 Technique vs Expression

You can have:

  • Great technique
  • Strong timing
  • Solid theory

…and still sound like you’re just going through the motions.

Why?

Because:

👉 Technique is physical.
Expression is internal.

And unless those two connect…

👉 You’ll always sound like you’re thinking instead of speaking.

🔥 The Turning Point

I’ve seen this happen with students many times.

At first, they:

  • Think too much
  • Second guess
  • Try to be “correct”

Then something clicks.

Suddenly:

  • Their phrasing opens up
  • Their tone improves
  • Their confidence grows

👉 They stop trying to play the guitar…

👉 And start allowing the music to come through them.

🎯 Why Most Guitarists Stay Stuck

Because they spend all their time:

  • Watching videos
  • Copying licks
  • Running scales

…and not enough time:

  • Listening
  • Exploring
  • Creating

At some point, you have to stop asking:

👉 “What’s the right note?”

…and start asking:

👉 “What do I hear?”

🎼 The Balance You Actually Need

Now don’t get me wrong.

Inside Alien Guitar Secrets, we focus heavily on:

  • Notes
  • Intervals
  • Scales
  • Chords

👉 Because this gives you the map

But music?

👉 That’s the territory

And you have to explore it.

🎧 How to Start Feeling Music

Here’s where you begin:

✅ 1. Sing What You Play

This is one of the most powerful things you can do.

If you can sing it:
👉 You understand it

If you can’t:
👉 You’re guessing

✅ 2. Slow Down

Give yourself space to:

  • Hear what you’re playing
  • Feel the phrasing
  • Control the dynamics

✅ 3. Play Without Judgement

You’re going to make mistakes.

That’s part of it.

👉 Expression isn’t about perfection
👉 It’s about honesty

✅ 4. Create Your Own Ideas

Even something simple:

  • A short phrase
  • A melody
  • A variation on a lick

This is where your voice begins.

🎯 Where This Fits in the AGS System

This isn’t separate from technique or theory.

👉 It’s the result of connecting them.

Inside the Fretboard Mastery Course, you don’t just learn:

  • Where notes are
  • What scales to use

You learn how to:

  • Hear them
  • Connect them
  • Express them

👉 So you’re not just playing shapes…

👉 You’re making music

🎯 Take This Further

This level of playing comes from understanding the instrument at a deeper level.

Inside the Fretboard Mastery Course, you’ll learn how to:

  • See the entire fretboard as one connected map
  • Understand notes, intervals, scales and chords without confusion
  • Break free from position-based playing
  • Improvise with confidence instead of guesswork

🎸 Final Thought

You can learn every scale.

You can memorise every lick.

But until you learn to feel what you’re playing…

👉 You’ll always sound like you’re searching.

So don’t just play music.

👉 Experience it.
